Beginning about 1817, members of the royal family resided here, Edward, Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) and his wife, Alexandra of Denmark moved in in the 1860’s, and the society that assembled around this couple became known as the Marlborough House Set. Marlborough House was built for the Duke of Marlborough in 1709–11 on the site of the St James’s Palace pheasantry. Sir Christopher Wren designed the house, though plans were drawn by his son, Christopher Wren the younger. The red Dutch bricks of the walls were ballast returning on vessels which transported soldiers to Holland to fight under the Duke of Marlborough. The house is not usually accessible to the public but in recent years parts have been opened up for viewing on the Saturday of London Open House weekend.

Sir Charles Mordaunt immediately filed for divorce, and Lady Mordaunt’s affairs were splashed all over the papers, the scandal intensifying when flirtatious letters from the Prince of Wales to the baronet’s wife were unearthed as evidence, and Lady Mordaunt’s lawyers called him up as witness to her defense. The presence of a member of the Royal family in court rocked the nation and questions arose concerning the propriety of the heir to the throne sending letters to a married woman and paying her calls during her husband’s absence.
There is also a reception every year on Commonwealth Day, which is attended by King Charles III in his role as Head of the Commonwealth. Afternoon tea when guests are present is usually served in the Red Saloon, one of perhaps the most beautiful apartments in Marlborough House.
In 1922, she invites Miss Ada Blake, then head of Louisville Collegiate School in Kentucky, to interview for the position of assistant principal. After journeying across the continent for a one-day interview, Miss Blake is immediately hired for the position, and upon Mrs. Caswell’s death in February 1924, Miss Blake becomes the second Principal of Marlborough School, a position she held for almost two decades. During Miss Blake's tenure, the curriculum expands significantly and Marlborough begins its evolution into a highly regarded college preparatory school, as each year more and more Marlborough students seek and are admitted to east coast women’s colleges.
