About the Commonwealth

King George and Queen Mary are, of course, also very constant guests at afternoon tea at Marlborough House, but when Their Majesties are present there are never other guests except members of the Royal family. This set was dubbed the “Marlborough House Set,” after Bertie’s London residence, which no doubt shook fear in the hearts of Queen Victoria and her stuffy retainers, whose long memories conjured the raucous, vulgar “Carlton House Set” of the debauched George IV. As the future King of England and Wales, Scotland and Ireland, and Emperor of India, etc, he saw himself a head above everyone by birth, and as such, welcomed all manners of people into his inner circle so long as they were amusing, well-mannered, sporting, and wealthy.

The Many Scandals of the Marlborough House Set

Following the retirement of Dr. Priscilla Sands, Ms. Jennifer Ciccarelli joined Marlborough in 2022 from the Columbus School for Girls, where she served as Head of School since 2014. Prior to that position, she was the Assistant Director/Acting Director at The Winsor School, a highly-regarded Grade 5-12 girls' school in Boston. She was previously the Academic Dean of The Girls' Middle School in the San Francisco Bay area, and spent the first 10 years of her career as a lower and middle school teacher at Greenwich Academy in the New York metropolitan area. Dr. Sands joined Marlborough in 2015 from the Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, where she served as President since 2011. In 1996, Sands was tapped to lead another highly respected girls’ school in Philadelphia, Springside School, and in 2011, when Springside merged with the all-boys Chestnut Hill Academy, the new Board appointed Sands President of the combined institution, Springside Chestnut Hill Academy.

Royal residence

The Marlborough House Gardens, at the back of the house overlooking The Mall, contain a thatched-roof rotating summer house built for Queen Mary, as well as Queen Alexandra’s pet cemetery. In 1959, Queen Elizabeth II gave Marlborough House to the British government to be used for the Commonwealth. It has been the home of the Commonwealth Secretariat since its establishment in 1965 and also houses the Commonwealth Foundation. As well as being the working home of the Commonwealth, Marlborough House often hosts conferences and summit meetings of the Commonwealth Heads of Government.

The house was built for Sarah Churchill, first Duchess of Marlborough, and was completed in 1711. It later became a Royal Palace and over the centuries Dowager Queens, Princes, Dukes and Duchesses have stayed in the house. In 1936, Marlborough House became the London residence of George V's widow, Queen Mary, who survived George by 17 years. A thatch-roofed rotating summer house built for her is still in place.[20] A plaque to commemorate Queen Mary was unveiled by Queen Elizabeth II in 1967 on the exterior wall closest to the corner with the Mall.

Inside the house, paintings of the duke’s battles line the walls of the central salon and the staircases. It became the Commonwealth’s headquarters in 1959 at the request of Queen Elizabeth II. It has been the venue for independence negotiations and many Commonwealth conferences, including Commonwealth Heads of Government meetings.

– Jennifer Ciccarelli appointed as Head of School.

Illustrating her distinguished leadership across four girls’ schools, Jennifer’s references spoke of her student-centric approach, her authentic allyship, her passion for educating and empowering young women, and her ability to articulate her vision, tackle tough topics, and build relationships. A strong-willed woman, she strained her relationship with the Queen whenever they disagreed on political, court, or church appointments. After her final break with Anne in 1711, the Duke and Duchess were dismissed from court, and the Duchess no longer had any communication with her formerly close friend, who died in 1714. Sarah later had famous disagreements with many important people, including her daughter Henrietta Godolphin, 2nd Duchess of Marlborough; the architect of Blenheim Palace, John Vanbrugh; Prime Minister Robert Walpole; King George II; and his wife, Queen Caroline.

Thankfully, Bertie acquitted himself correctly and Sir Charles Mordaunt’s lawyers were unable to find fault with his defense. Lady Mordaunt was proven insane and disgraced and divorced at 28, Harriett spent the rest of her days in an asylum and died in 1906. When Anne came to the throne after William's death in 1702, the Duke of Marlborough, together with Sidney Godolphin, 1st Earl of Godolphin, rose to head the government partly owing to his wife.

The Duchess was kept in all of her offices – purely for the sake of her husband's position as Captain-General of the army – and the tension between the two women lingered until early in 1711.[49] This year was to see the end of their relationship for good. I came to her soon after; and by the backstairs which went down from her closet, her Royal Highness [Princess Anne], my Lady Fitzharding [one of Sarah's closest friends] and I, with one servant, walked to the coach where we found the Bishop [of London] [i.e. They conducted us that night to the Bishop's house in the city, and the next day to my Lord Dorset's at Copt-Hall. From there we went to the Earl of Northampton's, and thence to Nottingham, where the country gathered about the Princess; nor did she think herself safe till she saw that she was surrounded by the Prince of Orange's friends.

In 1960, the Marlborough School Foundation was formed, and the Mitchells generously sold the School to the Foundation, assuring the development of new buildings and ensuring Marlborough's survival well beyond her years as its leader. To celebrate Pi Day, Marlborough’s Math Department hosted themed educational activities and delicious treats for the entire community. The Class of 2027 unveils their class colors and class song to the Marlborough community. Enjoy living just a short walk from the Naylor Road and Southern Avenue Metro stations, and close to restaurants, grocery stores, pharmacies, recreation centers, and everyday services, as well as vibrant DC neighborhoods such as Anacostia, Navy Yard, and Southwest Waterfront. With public transit at your doorstep and close proximity to I-495 and I-295, the apartments for rent in Hillcrest Heights, MD at Marlborough House offer easy access to everything you need and want. Tea is generally poured out by Miss Knollys; though if the guests are very few this office is sometimes performed by Queen Alexandra.

Having obtained much humor from these letters, Gladys decided to wrap the letters in a bow and send them to the Marquess. Lord Londonderry read the letters, carefully tied the bow back around the envelopes and set them on his wife’s boudoir table with a note inscribed “henceforth, we do not speak“. Upon his marriage to Princess Alexandra of Denmark in 1863, the Prince of Wales was given the leases of Sandringham House and Marlborough House, and an annual income of £100,000. Up until then, the twenty-two year old Bertie was treated like a schoolboy, and the sudden banishment of tutors and governesses, and the fleshly delights of the marriage bed with a beautiful princess more than went to his head. He was now free from his strict upbringing and his mother’s gimlet eye, and the Prince and Princess of Wales quickly amassed a glittering, fast set of friends relieved to find the heir apparent anxious to live the gay social whirl of balls, dinners, races, and parties abhorred by the Queen.
